New plane crash simulation for staff training
Enac (National Agency for Italian Civil Aviation) has provided for a mandatory safety test for Catania airport. The simulation performed during the night between 15 and 16 December saw as a hypothetical situation that of a plane accident at the airport.
Exercise activities take place every year and are necessary to train the staff in view of any problems in the sector. It is very important that all staff are prepared to act promptly to protect passengers.
The training follows international regulations for the protection of human lives in the event of accidents.
How the simulation took place in Catania
Vincenzo Fusco, the main manager of the airport management of Sicily, explained the structure of the simulation well. The exercise aimed to test the functionality of the safety and rescue system at Catania Airport.
Through careful coordination work it was possible to involve all airport functions as a whole.
Air accidents are very rare as it is a highly protected sector from the point of view of safety. Despite this, it is still necessary that all personnel receive adequate training in case of danger.
The exercise began during the night starting at 1:00 and then ending at 3:00 in the morning. To make this possible, there were no repercussions of any kind. The time chosen for the test did not create any kind of problem either to traffic or to the normal functioning of the Catania Vincenzo Bellini airport.
Operating authorities at Catania airport
The plane crash simulation is part of a mandatory test according to national and international regulations. The project is useful in order to apply the new PEA, Airport Emergency Plan, approved by the Aerodrome Emergency Committee.
The exercise involved 78 extras from the "Arturo Ferrarin" Aeronautical Technical Institute.
ENAC observers, Civil Protection and representatives of the Prefecture were also involved. The test also required the use of four airport fire brigade vehicles. Obviously, airport rescue ambulances could not be missing, also supported by a 118 vehicle.
